We want you to know that we take a lot of pride in Manitoulin Island and have been doing our best to support local businesses (ie: printing company and embroidered hats) . Therfore our costs are a little more than if we had gone to a company over seas.
Our books and journals are printed in Espanola at OJ Graphix and our hats are made locally at Rivermist Designs in Kagawong. We are also an official "Manitoulin Made" branding member of the Chambers of Commerce.
Manitoulin has given a lot to us, and we would like to give a little back. We are greatful for local businesses who are carrying our products and we hope that "Hawbear and Friends" gives a little bit of our Manitoulin Culture to you as well.

A little bit about the book series:
The Hawbear book series was inspired by the local surroundings of Manitoulin Island where both the author and illustrator were born and raised.
Manitoulin Island has unique berries called Hawberries which make excellent jam's and jellies. If you are fortunate to be born on Manitoulin, you are forever a "Haweater" ----- Hence the name of our bear family.

Our Characters:
Sheila McDermid was born and lives on Manitoulin Island with her husband (also a Haweater). Their 3 children have grown and spread their wings but return to their Haweater roots often. Sheila has worked in the Childcare field for over 25 years and is finally realizing her dream of writing childrens books. She is excited to be working with her daughter Shannon, who illustrates her books. With the love, support and encouragement from family and friends, she has faith that "Dreams do come true!!"
Shannon Mistry (Sheila's daughter) was born and raised on Manitoulin Island and is a true Haweater. She crossed the Little Current bridge to set off on her adventure to become a Classical Animator. She currently works as an Animator in Toronto, and lives with her husband (also an Animator) and their two very spoiled cats. Shannon has worked in the Animation Industry on various projects such as: Webkinz - an interactive children's website; Kaboose.com and on television programs such as; ‘Total Drama Island’ and “Yin Yang Yo”, as well as the Christmas Special— “A Very Barry Christmas”.
